Product Description
Semi-refined carrageenan (E407a), often called Processed Eucheuma Seaweed (PES), is also derived from red seaweed. The key difference from the refined type is that the extraction process is less intensive. The seaweed is treated with a potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution, which dissolves some impurities but leaves the cellulose network of the seaweed largely intact. It is then washed and dried. PES is generally more cost-effective and is used where high clarity is not required.
Primary Application Scenarios:
· Meat and Poultry: Its primary application is in meat brines and marinades for its excellent water-binding and fat-binding capabilities, enhancing yield and texture in products like sausages, hot dogs, and deli meats.
· Pet Food: Used as a gelling agent in canned wet pet food to create a firm gel that binds moisture and ingredients together.
· Industrial Applications: Often preferred for applications where a slight cloudiness or higher pulp content is acceptable, such as in some fruit preparations or pie fillings.
